Horizon
by Sophie Littlefield
5- Moms Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Dessert. It doesn’t get any better!
Synopsis: (From Good Reads)
Cass Dollar is a survivor. She's overcome the meltdown of civilization, humans turned mindless cannibals, and the many evils of man.
But from beneath the devastated California landscape emerges a tendril of hope. A mysterious traveler arrives at New Eden with knowledge of a passageway North—a final escape from the increasingly cunning Beaters. Clutching this dream, Cass and many others decamp and follow him into the unknown.
Journeying down valleys and over barren hills, Cass remains torn between two men. One—her beloved Smoke—is not so innocent as he once was. The other keeps a primal hold on her that feels like Fate itself. And beneath it all, Cass must confront the worst of what's inside her—dark memories from when she was a Beater herself. But she, and all of the other survivors, will fight to the death for the promise of a new horizon….
What Did I Think?
Horizon marks the end of the Aftertime series and I have to admit that I am sad that it is over. I am glad to report though that the series went out not with a whimper but with an "OMG, what just happened. . . Nooooooooooooooooo. . . seriously? oh wait! Yay . . . AHHHH that was so freaking awesome" BANG. This is not a series about a girl with some unknown till now amazing power or strength who suddenly saves the world, this is a series about a girl who is flawed and falls down and screws up while she tries to just save herself and the people she cares about in an already messed up world. I loved it so much for daring to be different. Have I mentioned the Zombies??? They are still there and they are still creepy!
This time around Cass and her daughter Ruthie are trying to make it in a settlement of survivors. With Smoke in a coma and Dor keeping busy elsewhere, Cass turns back to drinking to get by. While I hated to see that, I also felt like it was completely authentic to who Cass is. I like that Sophie Littlefield did not just make Cass perfect since we are at the end of the series. Instead, we see exactly what we have seen all along; a woman who tries, sometimes messes up but then gets back up. I can admit that I had a little trouble connecting to Cass in the beginning of the series but now I love her. Not because she changed but because I understand her better.
The best thing about this book is that so much happens. We are not left with a bunch of unanswered questions, in fact questions I had not really even asked were answered. A lot of those answers were shocking! I was surprised so many times while reading, it made for long nights of fighting to stay awake to read "just one more chapter!" All those late nights were worth it! I can't review one of these books without again mentioning the world building. I think this series has the best Zombie Origin story of any that I have ever read or watched in a movie for that matter. If for some reason you have not read this series yet, I URGE you to go to Amazon and order all three together. Trust me when I say, you won't want to wait to start the next book when you finish one!
BOTTOM LINE: Read it! The whole series is Amazing!
