This Weeks Question:

Which book from your school days do you remember reading & enjoying? Is there a book published now that you'd like to see in today's curriculum for kids?

First, I have to say how excited I am for this weeks question!! I homeschool my son and reading is not his favorite subject (I'm pretty sure lunch is). We are using a curriculum that has books chosen for him to read this year and he is entirely uninterested in all of them. I have to admit that I can't blame him. He is reading one now called Star of Light that even I am putting off reading. I want to find more books that are appropriate and entertaining for a 13 year old seventh grader. I would be eternally grateful if you could leave suggestions in the comments!!! I am trying to find at least 1 "classic" book and 1 more contemporary read. I am thinking maybe The Outsider's for the classic book. I keep changing my mind though.

As far as what I read in school and loved, well my memory is just not that great. Most books that I specifically remember reading were in the last couple years of High School and College. Also, I was a literature lover even though so I know that the ones I loved are probably not the most universally loved choices.

In HS I read and loved.

Hamlet

Hamlet~ I know that is unusual but I just liked the characters.  I was a bit dramatic back then and this story was too.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby~ This is one of my favorite books of all time.

In College I read and Loved:

Fields of Fire

Crime and Punishment

Fields of Fire and Crime and Punishment.

Incidentally, I read both of those for history classes that I was taking.

For books published now that I think should be taught.
I have no idea!  I hope that you guys have some great suggestions though!

Maybe The Hunger Games? I actually did let my son read The Hunger Games and Catching Fire already this year. He did like them both!

  1. I loved The Outsiders and think it's a great read for the classic read, but if you want something even more classic I would suggest Great Expectations. It's one of my favorite male lead classic novels. I read it when I was 12 and really enjoyed it.

What are you thinking for the contemp read?

Hamlet is my favorite Shakespeare read.

  2. The Hunger Games would be a great required read. I'd love my teacher for that haha. I need to read The Great Gatsby again, I read it so long ago and wasn't really that into it! I should give it another go as an adult.

  6. All I can remember is there was a lot of Shakespeare through my school years like at least one every year! That's all I remember and Simon Armitage poems.
