What Did I Think?
I have had the entire Luxe series on my shelf in hardcover for quite a while. I will admit that the covers sucked me in. I had to own those books but at the same time I was scared to read them. I have not read many historical novels and I just really did not know if they were for me. Turns out they are! I loved The Luxe and I can not wait to read more in the series!
I have seen the series described as Gossip Girl set in 1899 and I can't say that is inaccurate. The Luxe has girls behaving badly the way that only society ladies in fancy dresses can. Gossip, backstabbing, lying, smoking, secret rendezvous, and forbidden love affairs all the while maintaining their reputations and social status.
Elizabeth Holland is a girl that has the weight of her family's honor on her shoulders and I really liked her. Her sister Diana is just a ball of angsty energy. She is a rebel and I liked it! The story is told from different perspectives and I was glad for that, I think it made for a more complete story. I especially loved the addition of the excerpts from the society pages that begin each chapter.
If you are in the mood for something different, give this series a chance! One of the best things is that all the books are already out so no waiting!
BOTTOM LINE: I loved this glance into history and I am so excited to see where the story goes next!

This is one of my favorite series too. I was initially drawn in by the cover, but there's a great story between it. I'm a historical fiction fan, though, so it's nice to hear that someone unfamiliar with that genre loves these too!
ReplyDeleteI have all but the last book on my shelf. Maybe I'll start reading them soon.
