Everneath

Synopsis:  (From Good Reads)

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

What Did I Think?

I have heard a lot of great things about Everneath so when I started it I had pretty high expectations. I have to admit that the first half of the book was really just ok for me. I did not hate it but I was not super excited about it either. When books have a slow start like that it is hard for me to finish them. Life is short you know? There are more books I want to read than I will ever have time for and I generally don't want to keep reading one I am just not that into. There was always just enough to keep me interested though and I have to admit that by the last third of the book I was enjoying it much more.

The characters are just OK for me. The only character that I really liked more by the end than the beginning was Jack. Even the main girl Nikki was just alright. (I think it is shows my true feelings about the book when I have to look up the main characters name and I just finished the book today.) The plot was just ok as well. I should have felt more than I did but for whatever reason I just did not really get concerned for anyone until the last hundred pages or so. Interestingly, one of the more well. . . interesting parts of the story is a small but integral side plot about an older woman who Nikki meets while doing some community service. I did figure out early though what was going on there. Actually, I had most everything figured out very early. In fact, there were several times I was frustrated by the characters refusal to understand some basic "clues" they were given even though they were otherwise pretty intelligent.

In the end I think it was Jack who saved the story for me. There
are still a lot of unanswered questions but we did get a satisfactory "ending" to this one. If the book had not ended the way it did I doubt that I would be on board to read the next one. Now I am pretty sure that I will though, it is not something I will count down the days for. I have seen lots of other reviews shouting the praises of this book though so perhaps I was just not in the mood for it.

BOTTOM LINE: Started out slow for me but it picked up at the end.

  1. I saw the cover and fell in love. But with a story only "so so"...not sure it's a book for me.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  3. Great review. Too bad you didn't like it more. I loved it, but I do agree the beginning was a bit slow. As it picked up I really enjoyed it though. I am still a little confused about some things, but I am hoping the next book will take care of that.

  4. As you know, I felt exactly the same way. If it hadn't been for Jack and Mary, I think I probably would have abandoned this one halfway through. Thankfully, those two saved it.

I never did connect the dots with Mary, though looking back, I should have.

And Jack. Love that guy! He was definitely my favorite part, and I was far more concerned with him than I ever was with Nikki.

  5. I really liked Jack as well he just seemed like such a strong male lead for the book and he worked perfectly. Of course I did like the other main characters as well and I did find the idea of Everneath to be a cool one so I hope book two teaches us more about that area.

    Thanks for the great review
