Across the Universe
by Beth Revis
5- Moms Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes and Dessert. It doesn’t get any better!
Synopsis: (From Good Reads)
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.
What Did I Think?
I have no idea why it took me so long to read Across the Universe! I was lucky enough to attend a signing with Beth Revis last year and she is great! She answered questions about the book and I thought then that I would really like it. I found her to personally be very funny and interesting. So WHY did this book sit on my shelf for long? No idea. Sometimes I get a book and save it for just the right time or mood I guess. I really need to stop doing that because now I know what I have been missing for a year! This book was FABULOUS. I loved everything about it. That is rare because usually even if I like a book there will be some aspect that irks me, not in this one though.
The ship, Godspeed, is amazing. It is huge but Beth reminds us often that it is still constraining. There are edges and when it comes right down to it, there really is no place to run. That is just such a frightening thing. I find myself pretty freaked out by the thought of being in space anyway. Being Amy would be my nightmare. The fact that she is frozen for so long and yet still has conscious thought completely freaks me out! That is what makes it so much fun to read! Then there is Elder. His life is so sad to me. He is being raised to be the leader of the ship and as such is raised as a child of the ship; meaning that he is not allowed to know who his parents are. I felt his loneliness throughout the story and I felt such sorrow for him. The story itself was brilliantly done in my opinion. There were really a lot of surprises in this one for me.
If you have been saving this one or just not sure if you would like this one, I urge you to pick it up now and give it a chance! I know that "Science Fiction" is not for everyone but this book is so much more than just SciFi. I can not wait to read the second book, A Million Suns!
BOTTOM LINE: Don’t put this one off any longer!
