Drink Slay Love by Sarah Beth Durst
4- Steak and Potatoes. Meaty and Delicious and Wonderful.![]()
Synopsis: (From Good Reads)
Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.
Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.
The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
What Did I Think?
For some reason I think I had it in my mind that Drink Slay Love was an adult novel. When I started it though, I realized it was a YA. I have to say that I had a lot of fun with this one. I feel like I read something that I have never read before. I loved the idea of the Unicorn horn being the perfect built in stake for a vampire. I will admit to not being surprised by some of the things that I should have been but I did not mind that at all.
I really liked Pearl, she was a fun main character. She really did change and grow throughout the story and I enjoyed that. Her family was interesting. They operated like an organization more than a family. I felt such sorrow about that. I think it had a lot to do with influencing Pearl’s choices throughout the book though. Then there is Evan, sweet adorable Evan. He is almost a cliché with his perfectness, but he manages to be interesting enough to make me adore him.
Pearl also has to worry about an event that her family is planning. The mythology involved with all of that was one of my favorite things about the book. There are so many vampire books, so so many. I think there is room for them all as long as they have something new to bring to the table. Drink, Slay, Love did just that. That part of the story was very well thought out and was a highlight of the book for me. The book as a whole was a lot of fun and I can not wait to read more from Sara Beth Durst!
BOTTOM LINE: One of the most fun, original stories I have read in a while, loved it!

The more I see about this book around the blogosphere, the more I want it for myself...
ReplyDeleteI read this, too, and really liked it.
ReplyDeleteFantastic review! Funny how Rose changes throughout the book. I didn't care to much for her in the beginning, especially the first chapter :o]
The first couple of times I saw this on recommendations for myself, I wasn't too into it, but I'm starting to think it might be worth looking out for!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this book! I loved Pearl as a main character, and I've never thought about unicorns being the perfect weapon against vampires :-)
ReplyDeleteI've been kind of tired of vampires lately. Even when some of the vampire books look interesting I can't make myself read them, just because I used to read so many.
ReplyDeleteThis one though looks even more interesting than others I've seen lately, especially with the unicorn added to the mix. It's too bad Evan is somewhat cliche, but you still like him, so that's something.
I think I'll definitely make an effort to read this soon, maybe it'll turn me back on to vampires. Thanks for the great review! :)
