In 1897 England, sixteen-year-old Finley Jayne has no one except the "thing" inside her.
When a young lord tries to take advantage of Finley, she fights back. And wins. But no normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch...
Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special, says she's one of them. The orphaned duke takes her in from the gaslit streets against the wishes of his band of misfits. Emily, who has her own special abilities and an unrequited love for Sam, who is part robot; and Jasper, an American cowboy with a shadowy secret.
Griffin's investigating a criminal called The Machinist, the mastermind behind several recent crimes by automatons. Finley thinks she can help-and finally be a part of something, finally fit in.
But The Machinist wants to tear Griff's little company of strays apart, and it isn't long before trust is tested on all sides. At least Finley knows whose side she's on, even if it seems no one believes her

What Did I Think?
Though I will admit to enjoying reading about a “damsel in distress” on occasion, no damsel can compare with a kick butt character like Finley Jayne in my opinion. Not only is Finley strong but she is also smart! Thank you Kady Cross for writing such an amazing young lady! Finley finds herself in a bad situation right at the start of the story and right at the start is where I knew I was going to like reading about her.
Griffin King is a Duke who surrounds himself with the most interesting cast of characters. I wanted to be part of their club in any capacity. Friend, maid, chef, whatever I have to do. I have always been drawn to stories where there is a group of people who form a family bond without the blood ties. It seems that these groups have the most amazing relationships even when they are dysfunctional. Perhaps that makes them more like real families.
Steampunk is still a pretty new thing to me but I think it is fair to say that I am a fan. I love the setting. Victorian England seems to be a popular time and place (and it is the setting in this novel as well) and I like that. The ladies were proper and the gentlemen actually are well. . . gentleman. With a plot that does justice to the great cast and setting I think this is a must read. I know that I will be looking forward to more from this series!
BOTTOM LINE: THIS SERIES IS GOING ON MY MUST PURCHACE LIST, I LOVED IT!

I have been wanting to read this one for a while. Unfortunately I am super overwhelmed with books to read right now so it will be a while longer! I have never read any steampunk so this one will definitely be a first for me. I have a feeling that I will enjoy it since you did. We have similar taste in books!
